You Are Loved.

Today we are going to talk about sex…

Well not really. Just love.

But not love making.

Just…uhh…Biblical love.

Not Biblical love making…wait…that was weird…uhh…let’s move on.

Now love is definitely something that has been formed and molded into a lust filled feeling. This type of love is especially found in my generations popular culture. Love in today’s world has become self-seeking, self-pleasing, and selfish. Love is not getting naked and doing the “dirty dirty” with some hot dude that you met at the club while you were super wasted. Nor is it your girlfriend you had when you were 14.

And people in high school…you probably aren’t in love with the person you’re dating right now. Very few of you are, but most of you aren’t. Just saying you probably won’t marry them after you get out of school. Truth can suck sometimes I know.

1 Corinthians 13:1-8a says, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecyand can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.”

In the first 3 verses we see a common theme: action without love is meaningless.

Then we get to the many different adjectives that describe love. I’m going to touch on two real quick, but if you have any other favorites you should comment and let me know why you like them!

Love is not self seeking. This means love does not come out of the interest of yourself. It is not selfish. It does not run off of a me, me, me basis.

Love is all about giving and not about taking.

You don’t look for love to get something out of it. You don’t love for your own benefits. Love is not about what you can get. Love is not even close to being about what you can get. That’s selfish. Love is all about what you can give to someone else.

How much action you put into love shows how much you love.

And then we have my all time favorite one, “love never fails”. This agape sort of love is unconditional. It’s the love God has for us. It never fails. It’s unending, unchanging, perpetual, ceaseless, constant, infinite, continual, endless, unceasing eternal, uninterrupted, and everlasting. Do you get it yet? Love never on any circumstances fails.

1 John 4:9-10 gives us a perfect example of love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

4:10 is my favorite verse in the bible because it shows God’s true love for us. It was never about our love for Him. He never was pressured to die because He didn’t want to let our love for Him down. God sent His son Jesus to die for us because He genuinely and honestly loves us. It is never about the love we would give to Him, it is always about the love He gives to us. This is love. This is sincere, authentic, and straightforward love.

Jesus loves you. I try to emphasize that often in my blogs, but I’ll say it again, Jesus loves you. The attributes in 1 Corinthians 13 are the same attributes that Jesus uses with us. His love isn’t selfish. It’s never been about what He can get out of us. He loves us and wants to show you His love. And His love will never fail. Jesus loved you through your past mistakes, He loves you even now as we screw up in life, and He’ll always love you as you go on and mess up. He loves you and He’s never going to stop loving you.

Use Jesus example of love to show love to others. Replace the worlds love traits with Jesus’ love traits. And don’t ever forget who loves you the most.

  1. You took me back to high school, which is a feat, because it’s more than 30 years ago! I’ll never forget trying to explain to my husband how much I was madly in love with a boy when I was about 13-14. When my husband asked the name of the boy, for the life of me I couldn’t remember. I still am not 100% sure. It’s pretty funny how when you’re very young and experiencing feelings for the first time, you’re sure that you’ll be in love forever. Sometimes you end up like me, trying to remember what their names were. On the other hand, I met my husband at 19, which is still very young, but I fell truly in love a year later. We’re going to be married 24 years this month. We said the 1 Corinthians 13 verse at our wedding, and messed up practising it in real life, over and over. Thankfully, forgiving is strong in our relationship, and we continue to strive toward that unselfish love. Also, we laugh a lot. At ourselves and each other. That helps. Along with cupcakes. Great post. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I LOVE THIS! LOVE is an overused word because the world’s view of love is so messed up! Thanks for sharing with everyone the Biblical view of love. Everyone needs to read this!

  3. One of the local pastors took apart the Lord’s prayer and noted that it was “our” and “us” everywhere. We are supposed to pray for each other. And Jesus said “wherever two or three are gathered.”

So you nailed it when you characterized the opposition to love as “That’s selfish.” Love doesn’t fail, it just honors our free will when we decide “You know, I don’t want love right now. I want ME.”

  4. Hi! I loved this post. I have been getting to know this love for a while, I mean I gained conscience of how big it is, of how selfless it is. Even when I was wrong, He still loved me, He still defended me and made sure I was safe. This love kept me going through every storm, every problem the enemy has thrown my way. I am still standing and believing because of that love. I have no merit here… I really don’t.
I love JESUS more and more and I know that the kind of love I have for Him is growing, but still is very little comparing to the love He has form me.
I love that Bible verse on Jeremiah 29:11 : ” 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ”

Please keep on spreading the love, keep on reminding us that HE loves us and that HIS love is never ending….
